Information, tips and instructions

Open CRDOWNLOAD File on Mac OS

Google Chrome stores partially downloaded content in the CRDOWNLOAD files. CRDOWNLOAD files are produced when download starts and deleted/renamed when download completes.

On computers operating under Mac or OS X operating systems CRDOWNLOAD files are typically located in the “Downloads” folder. This folder could be easily found by opening “Finder” and clicking on the “Downloads” in the left sidebar.

CRDOWNLOAD files size could be different depending on the size of the downloaded file. When large file is being downloaded (a movie, operating system or game install) the CRDOWNLOAD file could take as much space as the downloaded file itself. But it doesn’t mean that you will need more space on the hard drive then the size of the downloaded file. CRDOWNLOAD file is only present while download is in progress and all downloaded content is transferred to it. Once the download is complete the CRDOWNLOAD file is renamed to the downloaded file name.

This makes CRDOWNLOAD files very efficient to find out if content was already downloaded or not. If you check the “Downloads” folder and CRDOWNLOAD file is present, then it means that the downloaded is still in progress and it is too early to use the file. But if you don’t see the downloaded file having CRDOWNLOAD extension and the downloaded file is available in the “Downloads” folder then it means that it is ready to use.

If you have some CRDOWNLOAD files hanging around and you think that they are not used by any of the Google Chrome browser processes, then it is safe to delete them. To verify you can check the creation date of the CRDOWNLOAD files in Finder and if the files are old then most probably they were hanging there for a while and the download is either stalled or Google Chrome browser crashed. Even in the case when you delete the CRDOWNLOAD file from an active download it won’t cause any data corruption. You will just need to restart the download from the beginning.

Besides CRDOWNLOAD files on Mac OS and OS X you may also encounter PART and DOWNLOAD files. PART and DOWNLOAD files serve similar purpose to the CRDOWNLOAD files but are generated by Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari web browsers correspondingly. Both PART and DOWNLAOD files are also located in the “Download” folder and store downloaded file content while it is being downloaded.
